GROUNDMAN WITH CDL

Position Description

Ground personnel are essential to the crew as they assist the foremen, climbers, fellers, and control the work site; all while interacting with the public. The Groundsman reports directly to the Crew Foreman and General Foreman.

Level I Position Requirements

  • Proper use of PPE
  • Current driver’s license: Commercial Driver's License required
  • Driving skills and vehicle safety including how to perform a pre-trip inspection
  • Job planning and preparation
  • Working knowledge of all job site tools and equipment
  • Completion of TCIA EHAP and Aerial Rescue training course.
  • First Aid / CPR Trained
  • Proficient in chipper operation and safety devices
  • Proficient in chipper / vehicle hookup
  • Understanding how to properly position a chipper
  • Proficient in chipper inspection and basic maintenance
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate a winch
  • Functional rigging knowledge, including practical application and inspection
  • Completion of Mowbray’s TCIA Step-1 Ground Operations and Chipper Operator Specialist

Level II Position Requirements

  • Proficient in Groundsman Level 1 requirements
  • Proficient in work site documentation
  • Trained in how to interact with the public
  • Working knowledge of how to identify job site hazards
  • Understanding of how to choose, store and fuel a chainsaw
  • Working knowledge of all chainsaw and chipper PPE
  • Proficient in chainsaw operation.
  • Working knowledge of basic Boom Truck operations (ground controls)
  • Completion of Mowbray’s TCIA Step-1 Chainsaw Specialist
  • Completion of EHAP Training

Level III Position Requirements:

  • Proficient in Groundsman Level 1 and Level 2 requirements
  • Commercial driver’s license
  • Proficient in safe tree felling
  • Working knowledge of cutting techniques
  • Basic rigging: trained in how to operate a lowering device
  • Basic knot tying skills
  • Must be able to perform an Aerial Rescue

Education:

  • High School Diploma (preferred)
  • Bi-lingual (preferred)
  • First Aid and CPR Trained (required)
  • EHAP Trained (required)
  • CDL (required)
  • Physically fit for the job (required)

The Specialized Tree Equipment Operator will report directly to the Crew Foreman assigned to their jobsite.

Responsibilities:

Personnel performing the role of Specialized Tree Equipment Operator will have the following responsibilities:

  • Operate equipment in a safe, efficient, and effective manner while minimizing all risks to the job site personnel, the public, and property.
  • Operate equipment in accordance with all MTS policies, procedures, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain equipment in accordance with all manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure the safe and secure storage of all equipment.
  • Notify MTS Fleet of any maintenance requirements or repair issues.

Qualifications

  • Driver's License - Required
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Required for Grapple drivers
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - for Sennebogens, Fallbach, and Diamant Operators, must obtain within 6 months
  • Experience in the tree care industry, utility line clearance and/or vegetation management - Preferred
  • 2 year's experience operating heavy equipment - Required

  • For Specialized Tree Equipment Operator (Journeyman Tree Trimmer) candidate must be assessed as a Climber 2 - Required

Responsibilities:

Personnel performing the role of Crew Foreman will have the following responsibilities:

  • Ensures that each individual is capable of performing their assigned duties
  • Assessment of every employee for skill proficiency
  • Assess every individual to ensure they are fit for duty before work begins
  • Inspiring and motivating each employee in the field to reach their potential every day
  • Perform comprehensive Daily Job Briefings before work begins
  • Ensure that each employee has the proper PPE according to the assigned task
  • Engaging with utility personnel and the general public as necessary
  • Perform equipment inspections prior to use
  • Request maintenance of equipment with General Foremen
  • Ensure proper work site set-up, including traffic signs/control, fire tools, Safety equipment, and drop/danger zone set-up
  • Communicate resources needed to complete projects to General Foremen
  • Request outages and line shut down activities to General Foremen
  • Perform Safety audits weekly, and communicate the results to the General Foremen
  • Provide support for daily/weekly toolboxes and Safety meetings
  • Conduct on the job field training
  • Lead/support incident response efforts

Crew Foremen have the authority to STOP WORK at any time they determine that unsafe conditions exist. Each Crew Foreman should be able to communicate weaknesses and strengths in the following areas; span of control, communication, and technology.
